Former Formula 1 driver Daniel Ricciardo sparks excitement with potential Baja 1,000 comeback
The former Red Bull and McLaren driver, known for his eight grand prix victories, hints at a potential return to motorsport in the Baja 1,000.
Ricciardo's popularity stems from his 257 F1 starts between 2011 and 2024, with most of his wins achieved with Red Bull. His last F1 appearance was at the 2024 Singapore Grand Prix, replaced by Liam Lawson for the final races.
The Perth-born driver officially retired in September, becoming a global racing ambassador with Ford, Red Bull's 2026 engine partner.
In an open letter, Ricciardo expressed his love for the Ford Raptor model, participating in the Raptor Rally at Lake Havasu, Arizona, where he enjoyed high-speed desert runs and rally jumps.
After the event, Ricciardo hinted at a potential Baja 1,000 appearance, saying, 'The itch for Baja is there, but I’ve got a lot to learn.'
He added, 'For me, it’s all about having fun. That’s always been my approach.'
Ricciardo's recent initiative to help young drivers take their first steps into car racing is also noteworthy. He will help pick two youngsters for a Ginetta Junior Scholarship assessment, offering a fully funded drive in the 2027 Ginetta Junior Championship.
The Ginetta Junior Championship, available to drivers aged 14-17, is a support bill for the British Touring Car Championship, the leading domestic motorsport category in the UK.
