Birmingham Bin Collection Schedule: New Year's Edition (2026)

Attention Birmingham residents! If you’re wondering about your bin collection schedule during the New Year week, you’re not alone—there have been significant changes this week as the city's waste management adjusts to the holiday season and staff time off.

Starting Monday, December 29, every household will experience a shift in their regular bin collection days. This means that the typical routine will be disrupted, and some households will even benefit from two collections this week due to missed pickups on Christmas Day and Boxing Day.

It's important to note that these adjustments are happening alongside ongoing strike actions by Unite members, which have caused challenges throughout the year for waste collection services.

For those with festive refuse piling up, here’s a breakdown of the key collection dates you need to remember:

If your regular bin collection day falls on Thursday—Christmas Day—you will have your first collection on Monday, December 29, followed by a second collection on Saturday, January 3.

On the other hand, if your usual collection is on Friday and you missed out on Boxing Day, expect a pickup on Tuesday, December 30, with another on Sunday, January 4.

For households with Monday collections, there's a special arrangement this week: your collection will occur on New Year’s Eve, Wednesday, December 31. Tuesday’s collections will be rescheduled to New Year’s Day, which is on Thursday, January 1. Lastly, Wednesday collections will take place on Friday, January 2, just for this week.

After this brief disruption, regular collection schedules will resume on Monday, January 5.

It’s also worth mentioning that while normal refuse collection will continue, recycling services remain suspended for the time being. Therefore, recyclable materials should be placed in black bags along with other rubbish for the time being.

If you're eager to dispose of your waste without waiting for the scheduled collections, Birmingham residents are encouraged to visit one of the city’s five household recycling centers. These facilities are open during extended hours over the Christmas break, providing a convenient option for those with excess rubbish or recycling.

The locations for these centers include Tameside Drive in Castle Bromwich, Lifford Lane in Kings Norton, Holford Drive in Perry Barr, Norris Way in Sutton Coldfield, and James Road in Tyseley. Just keep in mind that you must book an appointment in advance to use these sites.

All recycling centers operate from 7 AM to 9 PM Monday through Friday, except for New Year’s Eve, when they’ll close at 6 PM. On weekends, they are available from 8 AM to 6 PM.

So, mark your calendars and plan accordingly to ensure your rubbish is collected on the right days!
